Watch our 14-second video showcasing a 3D printed bust of Marcus Aurelius, scaled directly from a 3D scan of the iconic Louvre statue. This project transforms ancient history into a tangible, modern object, crafted as a meaningful gift for someone following Stoicism. This scaled down bust is 5″ tall.
I bet Marcus Aurelius would’ve never have never imagined 2000+ years later… that not only people would be reading and following his journaling, but also producing what would appear to be out of thin air, a replica of him down to the hairs on his head!
Why 3D Print This Bust?
-
- Personal connection: Turn abstract philosophy into a tangible object with emotional significance.
-
- Historical appreciation: Bring a piece of Roman legacy into your hands, scaled from an authentic museum sculpture.
-
- Modern technology meets ancient art: 3D printing allows us to honor cultural heritage in new ways while showcasing the possibilities of modern fabrication. Whether exploring SLA for fine detail, FDM for accessible prototyping, or PolyJet for multi-material and visually detailed studies, the results are impressive with SLS offering the best of all options!

At 3D Prototype Design, we specialize in SLS 3D printing to produce durable, accurate forms. But beyond precision, our prints are designed to connect people with ideas, stories, and meaning — making each piece both functional and inspirational.
Who Was Marcus Aurelius?
Marcus Aurelius (121–180 CE) was Roman emperor from 161 to 180 CE and a celebrated philosopher. Known as the quintessential philosopher-king, he led with both intellect and moral discipline, even amidst war, plague, and political pressure. He studied Stoicism throughout his life and applied it rigorously in his leadership.
Meditations — The Emperor’s Journal
Marcus’ most enduring legacy is Meditations, a twelve-book series of personal reflections written in Greek. Unlike formal philosophy texts, it reads like a journal, filled with concise, practical wisdom:
-
- Live fully in the present moment.
-
- Accept what is beyond your control.
-
- Respond to life with virtue and discipline.
-
- See life’s impermanence as clarity, not fear.
The Louvre Bust — A Portrait of Thought
The original bust is housed in the Musée du Louvre’s Département des Antiquités grecques, étrusques et romaines. Dating to the late 2nd century CE, it combines imperial authority with philosophical reflection. The upward tilt of Marcus’ gaze symbolizes introspection and contemplation, capturing the essence of the man behind the meditations.
Stoic Wisdom for Today
Whether you are familiar with Stoicism or discovering Marcus Aurelius for the first time, his insights remain profoundly relevant:
“You have power over your mind — not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.” — Marcus Aurelius, Meditations
