Before the magic of 3D printing, our grandfather company, HD Patterns and Matchplates Inc. (a well-respected foundry established in 1971), created and carved patterns, matchplates, molds and prototypes by hand. Not only did it require the skills of master craftsmen, it was also incredibly labor intensive with no room for human error.

HD Patterns researched the revolutionary new technology called rapid prototyping in the mid 90’s, established 3D Prototype Design Inc. and made prototype manufacturer history by purchasing the first FDM machine sold in Canada. Although the original intent for the first machine was to sell services to create foundry patterns, it quickly became apparent that the real industry need was instead to help customers create fast and accurate prototypes and final parts instantly.

As 3D Prototype’s customer base grew and technology improved, we stepped up our prototype manufacturing services by investing in Selective Laser Sintering which, still to this day, allows for higher quality final parts and volumes. We now have several sintering stations on-site, as well as other 3D printing technology, material options and colours to round out the mix. In fact, our head technician not only maintains our fleet but has also added modifications and improved to produce superior parts.
