Honestly, we’re surprised that Shapeways didn’t closed much sooner, and that was years before they obtained so much investor support and financing. While our SLS (Selective Laser Sintering) 3d printing pricing was very competitive with the majority of their offerings (beating them several times),  it still baffled us as to how Shapeways could undercut some pricing the way they did on large parts and still be in business.

Shapeways Bankruptcy Leaves a Trail of Collateral Damage

Unfortunately, Shapeways’ too good to be true SLS pricing for large objects was just that. In many cases, it has deeply impacted small businesses and entrepreneurs as Shapeways bargain pricing was RELIED on as a part of their final production costs. With Shapeways no longer an option, many are now scrambling to see if they can find alternative suppliers, so they can continue to stay in business while still offering their products at a price point the market can bear.

Insight from a 3D Printing Services Company

The bottom line is that all SLS service providers (including 3D Prototype’s 3d printing services) have to give or take, pay the same amount for materials, printing machines, hydro, and shipping. Then add on operating costs such as administration, advertising, IT and let’s not forget labor and hopefully profit. As the first 3d printing services company in Canada (est. ‘96) we’ve seen a lot of companies come and go which now includes Shapeways. In fact, several companies after closing have contacted us to purchase their equipment and materials, so we know we must be doing something right.

Was Shapeways demise due selling below cost parts?

Great question. Over the years our sales team has had to address the ‘Shapeways Factor’ on physically large sized part SLS quotes. And our response was ‘Honestly, we don’t know how Shapeways is doing it and still in business. We are competitive and we ALL have the same minimum base costs. They have to be making some parts at cost or below cost, because that price is literally less than our raw material costs alone. But, please do keep us in mind should you require excellent quality parts and service from a reputable 3d printing supplier that truly values your business at a fair price.”
